Reddit vs StockTwits vs Discord: Where Sentiment Actually Leads Price
Retail sentiment doesn't come from one source. It comes from a fragmented ecosystem — Reddit finance subs, StockTwits streams, Discord open channels, public X (Twitter) posts. Each forum has a distinct culture, participant profile, and signal-to-noise ratio. Understanding which forum is informative for which type of trade is a subtle but important edge.
Reddit: the swing-trade signal source
Reddit's finance subs (r/pennystocks, r/smallstreetbets, r/wallstreetbets for the mid-caps) have long thread structures and clear author identities. Signals tend to be earlier than they appear on other forums but require filtering for karma, account age, and post history to avoid promoted picks. Reddit's own vote system provides a crude quality filter.
StockTwits: the intraday feed
StockTwits streams are ticker-native and update in real-time. This makes them well-suited for detecting intraday sentiment spikes on tickers that just started moving. Downside: the platform is heavily populated by promotional accounts and the signal-to-noise ratio is lower than Reddit's. Best used for velocity detection, not qualitative reading.
Public Discord: the momentum ignition source
Public Discord finance servers (open invite channels) are where a lot of small-cap momentum ignites — often before the moves appear on Reddit or StockTwits. However, Discord requires active membership to observe and doesn't have permanent search history. StockRiot pulls from a curated set of public Discord servers with explicit tracking permission.
X (Twitter): the professional overlay
Financial X is different from the other three because it has a strong presence of professional traders, analysts, and journalists alongside retail. Sentiment on X often reflects informed opinion, but it's harder to filter because account credibility varies enormously. Best used as a validator, not a primary source.
What StockRiot actually aggregates
StockRiot pulls from all four sources but weights them differently based on the sentiment signal being measured. Velocity favors Discord and StockTwits (which detect early acceleration). Breadth favors Reddit and X (which have wider audiences). Polarity favors Reddit (which has more sustained comment threads where sentiment can be parsed). The composite Riot Score reflects this weighting.

Which forum has the best sentiment signal quality?
Depends on what you're measuring. For velocity detection, Discord and StockTwits are earliest. For sustained sentiment reads, Reddit's threaded structure preserves more signal. There's no single 'best' — StockRiot aggregates across all four.
Isn't Reddit sentiment already priced in?
For mainstream mid-caps and mega-caps often mentioned on r/wallstreetbets, yes. For sub-$500M small-caps mentioned on r/pennystocks or r/smallstreetbets, the sentiment is often earlier than institutional flows and can still be informative.
Do you scrape private Discord servers?
No. StockRiot only pulls from publicly-joinable Discord servers with explicit tracking permission. Private paid Discord servers are not sources.
Can I filter Riot Score by source?
Not currently in the public product. The composite score reflects the weighted contribution from all sources.
How often is the sentiment data refreshed?
Every 15 minutes during US market hours; every 60 minutes overnight and weekends.
